Tuesday Talk: Teresa Piro of CAN CAN Cleanse

{I am really excited to share with you a new interview style post that will be popping up on Tuesdays. It is called Tuesday Talk. Do you like that? I will be interviewing green business owners, designers, and inspiring moms. If you know someone who would be great for Tuesday Talk please let me know!}

This week we get to meet Teresa Piro of CAN CAN Cleanse. Don't you just love the name? Being a musician I immediately think of women in big petticoats kicking up their legs! - but Can Can Cleanse is actually a company in the San Francisco Bay area that provides liquid cleanses that give your body a break from the stress and toxins of everyday life. Teresa makes nutrient and vitamin-rich beverages from whole, organic fruits and vegetables, herbal teas, raw nuts, fresh herbs and spices - that let your digestive system rest and relax.

{If you don't live in the San Francisco area, don't worry - Teresa gives us advice on how to do a cleanse at home!}

ME: Could you tell us a little bit about your company and how you got started?
TERESA:  CAN CAN Cleanse is a nutritional 3-day liquid cleanse program that is designed to give the body a break from the stress and toxins of the on-the-go lifestyle. The beverages are made from whole, organic fruits and vegetables, herbal teas, raw nuts, fresh herbs and spices. CAN CAN is a holistic approach to let your digestive system rest and relax. It’s also very much a mental exercise in willpower, self-control and time of reflection on current eating habits. The purpose behind cleansing is to help people jump-start goals - be it to curb cravings, break bad habits, discover mental clarity, and awaken energy or to ignite weight loss. CAN CAN Cleanse is all about boosting self-esteem and reminding people what it feels like to feel good!

CAN CAN was born in my SF apartment kitchen. I was leading DIY cleanses for friends and friends-of-friends and discovered that many had a difficult time (or simply dreaded) preparing the recipes themselves. Cleansing should be a positive, stress-less experience; that was the aha moment for me. I realized that with my love for being in the kitchen and promoting seasonal fruits and vegetables, I could preapre the cleanses for others. By doing so, I would ensure a more enjoyable cleanse experience and help others succeed at jumpstarting their nutritional goals.

ME: The name Can Can is so cute. How did you come up with it?
TERESA: The first CAN comes from the our packaging; we use darling glass canning jars. The second CAN is from my inspirational mantra, "You can do it!" The cleanse is prepared for you so it's my hope that this creates ease in cleansing and brings the client one step closer to a successful, positive experience.

ME: How often should a person cleanse and what are the benefits?
TERESA:  CAN CAN believes in cleansing seasonal – 4 times per year. As the seasons change, what better time to check-in with our bodies? A fantastic way to acknowledge the different produce that becomes available to us and should be incorporated into our diets. I find it’s much easier for many people to practice short seasonal cleanses throughout the year. Three days every three months is realistic to commit to and keeps us on a healthier path all year long.

Benefits include:

Mental Clarity
Increased Energy & Stamina
Weight Loss
Better Sleeping
Clearer, Healthier Looking Skin & Eyes
Elimination of Toxicities from the Gastrointestinal Track
Reduced Sugar Cravings
A Kick-Start to Breaking Bad Habits (Smoking, Drinking, Caffeine, Eating Processed Foods)
Self-Confidence Boost

ME: Can you tell us about where you get your fruits and veggies for CAN CAN Cleanse?
TERESA:  During the seasonal bounty, we source from Oak Hill Farm of Sonoma as much as possible. They practice sustainable farming practices and their produce is amazing! We also source from other northern and central valley California organic farms. We’re fortunate to be in California where we have local access to produce from these farms.

ME: Have you seen Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead? If so, what did you think of it?
TERESA: Yes, I have seen Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I found it to be a candid story that delivered a message of hope and encouragement. It's a difficult battle for people who struggle with their weight, but Joe Cross really inspires. I tell everyone to see the movie and start juicing!

ME: Have you seen any amazing transformations from your clients?
TERESA: Yes! I have received a handful of emails from those who felt so empowered by CAN CAN’ing that they bought their own juicers and started juicing at home. I love hearing this! I also have clients who write weeks or months later sharing their continued successes with me; breaking caffeine addictions, eliminating white sugar from their diet, losing 15 or more pounds. I’m truly inspired by the emails I receive from clients.

ME: Can you recommend any recipes or books for people who would like to cleanse but don't live in San Francisco?

Hip Vintage Finds on FAB

Another way to green your wardrobe is to buy vintage. Every Monday night (7pm) FAB opens a Vintage shop. This week there is a sale called "Dorothea's Closet" full of vintage dresses, shoes, jewelry, and hats. I am eyeing the 60's Mod Jersey Drop Waist Dress (wondering if a drop waist would be flattering on me...). Since it is vintage, there is only one of each so hurry over for the best selection. To find this sale, click on "Shops," then "Vintage," then you will see "Dorothea's Closet" along with other vintage sales!

Wear This, Not That: Old School Kicks

Autonomie Project is a great company to check out. They only carry fair trade, organic, vegan, sweatshop free clothing and accessories. These shoes show a great eco-friendly alternative to Converse. There are a lot of other brands of eco-friendly shoes that are a little bit easier to find on sale. Some other options would be Patagonia, Keen, and Simple which can be found on all the big sites like Zappos and 6pm. If you enjoy these posts please check out the Eco-Fashion tab above.

TRTL BOT iPhone Covers from Recycled Bottles

FAB has some pretty cool iphone covers by TRTL BOT.  These iPhone cases made from recycled plastic bottles, but TRTL BOT also donates a percentage of its proceeds to environmental groups. I like the multifunctional design as well. Some have little kick stands or a slot to hold your cards.

Organic Cocktail Hour: Samuel Smith's Organic Cider

It is Friday again and time for Organic Cocktail Hour where we will be exploring organic beer, wine, cider, sangria and cocktails! This week I have selected Samuel Smith's Organic Cider. I do love cider but I have enlisted my husband once again as a taste tester.

Samuel Smith's Cider  is an independent brewery in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England. It is Yorkshire's oldest brewery, founded in 1758. They make a wide range of beers and all of them are vegan. The apple juice used to produce this cider contains a mix of apple varieties selected to balance fresh apple flavor with tartness, acidity, and sweetness. Samuel Smith's uses a wine yeast strain to ferment their cider, providing a clean finish and allowing pure apple flavor to shine through. It is Certified Organic by the USDA-accredited UK Soil Association.

Company Description:
Bright straw-gold with excellent clarity, Samuel Smith's Organic Cider has a light body with brilliant conditioning, a crisp clean flavor, and a dry finish. The bouquet is fresh apples, with a soft floral note.

ME: SO, tell me what you think Pike. Is this good cider?
PIKE: (mmm.) I like it. It is light in color and taste. very refreshing. a little bit sweet.
ME: Are you a fan of ciders?
PIKE: Yes, I like the Granny Smith Woodchuck or a Hornsby's.
ME: How does Sam Smith compare with those brands?
PIKE: It is a little bit lighter almost like a champagne of cider. You would like this a lot.
ME: Well, pass it then! (mmmm) you're right. We will be buying this again! What type of food would you eat this with?
PIKE: I would choose a creamy soup or something spicy.

We bought this Sam Smith's Cider at Total Wine for $3.79 for 1 Pint. Stay tuned for next week's pick. In the meantime, check out the past picks under the food tab or here.
